Speaking before local media who reported on a local plumbing-go-wrong incident, PAL President Luke Petersen says they have seen too many plumbing disasters brought about by well-meaning homeowners who tried to repair their own plumbing issues. “What could have been a simple repair turned out to be a catastrophic plumbing problem that has even led to a more expensive water damage issue. A persistent slow drain for instance has caused pipe corrosion due to continuous use of drain cleaners which are actually very harmful to the plumbing system. Then there are homeowners that try to fix clogs or try to fix leaks but end up remedying the issue on a short term period only to have a bigger problem later on,” shares Petersen.

Petersen says it is very common for homeowners to reach for drain cleaners whenever they encounter a slow draining sink. “Continued use of this chemical substance can be very harmful for the health, the environment and the home plumbing system,” explains Petersen.

In fact an ABC News article has mentioned that there is a growing number of homeowners who are getting more confident about doing DIY work due to countless DIY guides available over the internet, plus of course to save up some money.

“In a recent Time magazine poll, 36 percent of people said they are spending less on home improvements, but 23 percent said they are doing more home repairs themselves rather than hiring help. The argument for going with the pros isn't just about saving money in the long run. It's also about saving yourself. Emergency room doctors say they have treated more do-it-yourself injuries in the past year as people cut corners to save money.”

This mistake can be very costly. (2) When you try to fix frozen pipes by yourself by the use of hairdryer or something similar, the water pipe’s pressure might increase and it can lead to permanent damage.”
